Our culture here at Kino is really important to us. We work hard, but we like to make sure that we have fun too. Visits to exhibitions, the rise of our dodgeball team and all sorts of other weird and wonderful things that excite, inspire and help make us who we are. Here’s where you can see what we’ve been up to.
This week is Joy and Peace week in the Smithfield Rotunda Garden. There are free events going on everyday set to the vibrant backdrop of Morag Myerscough and Luke Morgan’s striking new art installation.
We couldn’t resist popping out of the studio this lunchtime to experience a bit of operatic colour and culture.
Here’s what’s on all week.
A bit of a stretchAugust 2017
There was a buzz around the studio this month about weekly lunchtime ‘pie and lattes’ sessions, and the team were keen to it check out…
Little did they know they would be thrown into a room full of mats, soft music and contorted into all sorts of different shapes by an expert Pilates instructor! But everyone loved it and felt the benefits straight away so we’ve signed up for more sessions – we’ll keep you updated on our progress over the coming weeks!
California Dreamin’July 2017
Recently, a group of us went to the Design Museum for an after-hours talk by designers Brian Studak and Jon Abbott on the design and curation of the current exhibition, California – Designing Freedom.
The talk was really insightful and afterwards, we had a chance to explore the exhibition – from Emory Douglas’s Black Panther posters to a replica of the Captain America chopper from Easy Rider. It’s on until October so get yourself down to see it!
Big (face)hugs all roundMay 2017
A few of the braver members of Kino were lucky enough to have been invited to walk the green carpet of the Alien Covenant global premiere in Leicester Square, London.
We love the Alien films so being able to join Ridley Scott and the stars of the film for it’s first public screening was an out of this world experience.
Prepare to be thrilled but don’t forget, in the cinema, everyone can hear you scream!
A much nicer Tuesday!April 2017
This week, a couple of us went along to the Oval Space in Hackney for April’s Nicer Tuesdays hosted by It’s Nice That!
There were inspirational talks from a wonderful selection of illustrators, designers, animators and film makers. If we had to pick a favourite, it would be Sam T Smith, co-founder of the Me & EU postcard. Relevant and thought provoking, it’s definately work checking out. To find out more click here. We’re already looking forward to the next one!
A Christmas stuffingDecember 2016
Mix up some Christmas spirit, sprinkle in a bit of Christmas jumper day madness, throw in a good cause, make it the day after the Christmas party and you’ve got a recipe for... fun!
We may have had slightly blurry mince pies but the sweet and savoury goodies ‘proved’ to be a big hit!
But the real treat was helping to raise money for the wonderful children’s charity Save the Children.
Artmaking fun-dingSeptember 2016
Being big believers in public art projects, Kino are delighted to announce that we are sponsoring ‘Acts Of Translation’, a month long programme of art events at lewishamarthouse.org.uk curated by the London Drawing Group.
The aim is to promote the joy of drawing through a series of free workshops, talks, walks and exhibitions running from 19 Sep – 16 Oct.
So why not pay them a visit and put your arts into it!
The way to Kino's heart...August 2016
For the past 3 weeks we've very much enjoyed the company of Barney Beckman our graphic design placement from Leeds College of Art.
A talented and personable designer who will no doubt will be an asset to the future of the industry... he also made us some awesome muffins which is always a win in our books!
Somewhere, under the rainbow!July 2016
The UK has had it’s fair share of rain this summer, but in the words of Dolly Parton “If you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain”.
And it looks like the rainbow was shining down on us in this amazing photo captured by one of the Kino team.
There’s never a dull moment at our offices when you are striving for that little bit of gold!
30 years young!June 2016
2016 sees in Kino Design’s 30th year in business. To celebrate, Kino and it’s extended family took a weekend break to London’s country estate, The Grove. We ate, swam, relaxed, played and partied in true Kino style. A fantastic weekend was had by all and we’re certain the great memories of this weekend will last for at least another 30 years to come. A special thanks goes out to all our lovely clients, collaborators and staff, past and present, for being part of an amazing journey.
Pick me up some of that!April 2016
We popped down to Somerset House to this years’ Pick Me Up Festival. Loads to see and do – the highlight of the afternoon was seeing Alan Kitching in action and his amazing collection of work up close and personal. We even picked up a couple of letters and had a go ourselves!
Pizza, Pizza!April 2016
To say thanks for everyone’s hard work and to welcome in British Summer Time, Andy and Andrew treated us all to pizza for lunch. It wasn’t just your average delivery however!
We got a visit from the guys at Well Kneaded who cooked up a storm in their beautifully quirky Citroen H Van. Three delicious pizza varieties were washed down with ice cold beer. What a way to start the weekend!
In the sumptuous surroundings of the Hotel Café Royal, Regent St, the Kino team celebrated Christmas in style.
The entertainment was provided from the hilarious, extravagant and sometimes emotional Black Cat Cabaret. The shirts were pressed, the frocks were frilly, the lipstick red enough to stop traffic... and that was just the compère!
Needless to say a very merry time was had by all.
Summer’s a hitJune 2015
At last, Summer is here. This Tuesday some of us celebrated the arrival of sunshine with a picnic and softball match in Regents Park.
There was some healthy competition, some home runs and even a slide to third base! Despite the achy limbs the following day it was a brilliant evening that’s likely to see a second or third round before the end of the summer.
What a ‘Carrie’ on!May 2015
Last night a group of us headed down to the Southwark Playhouse to see Carrie - The Musical. Not sure if we should expect a comedy or horror, we cautiously took our seats... and we were all wonderfully surprised! Perfectly cast with Evelyn Hoskins as terrifyingly awkward Carrie and Kim Criswell as Carrie’s creepy mother, the show was fantastic and we were gripped from start to finish. This adaptation should definitely be heading to the West End.
Blood curdling bake offOctober 2014
We love our cake here at Kino, and the company charity bake off often brings out the best Berry’s and Hollywood’s in all of us.
But our Halloween themed bake off took things to a whole new scary level! We had brains, rats, severed fingers and voodoo gingerbread men, all tasting ghoulishly good with a mid-morning cuppa, as well as raising money for charity.
Get your brushes out!September 2014
A couple of us recently went to a screening of Signpainters Film, a documentary directed by Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, which explores the dying trade of traditional signwriting.
We were lucky enough to see a live demonstration by Mike Meyers, a genius with a paintbrush and a fantastic storyteller. Beautifully shot, charming and inspiring, we thoroughly recommend you watch it!
Up in lightsJuly 2014
Su’s just come back from a weekend in Warsaw, Poland. Whilst she was there she visited the Museum of Neon. As Kino means cinema in Polish, there were a lot of amazing signs to remind her of work!
If you’re ever going to Warsaw, get yourself down there. Dedicated to Poland’s cold war era signage, it’s fascinating for anyone interested in type, neon and lots of kitsch! To find out more, click here.
Work experienceJuly 2014
This week we’ve had some extra help in the form of Year Ten student Zoe Dutton. It’s always great to have new faces in the studio.
Zoe has been lovely to have around and has done some great work on a drinks packaging brief that we set her. Her ideas were based on Baroque art and to say thanks she sent us this lovely Renaissance postcard which she thought looked like our studio at lunch!
Smokehouse dodgers!July 2014
Just a little update on how the Smokehouse Dodgers are getting on this dodgeball season.
Played two. Won two.
Let’s hope this lucky streak continues for the rest of the season!
